Don’t get me wrong: romantic, windswept, emotional engagement photos are amazing. But studio portraiture, white vignettes, 80’s spandex, headbands, leg warmers, and exercise equipment? NOW YOU’RE TALKING.
This couple holds a dear place in my heart (Mohini and I both were attacked by sand fleas in Egypt and still have the scars to prove it hahaha). We discussed in length all of her plans for her May wedding and at the end of our conversation, she proposed to me the idea of taking hilariously awkward engagement photos for their save the dates.
“I’m not sure if that’s something you’d be interested in?”
“SAY NO MORE. I’M 10,000,000% IN”
We were pumped coming up with ideas and details, but when they stepped into the studio in their 80s gear and Hawaiian shirts/cargo shorts I ALMOST FELL INTO THE FLOOR LAUGHING.
We had to take plenty of breaks to regain our composure (check out the end of the blog posts for the outtakes), had 80’s music blasting to get us inspired, and had THE BEST time doing this.
We still plan to do “serious” engagement photos, but we are all like, HOW CAN WE TOP THIS?!
Check the whole series below and let us know your favorites!!

We laughed first over a beer, chased down an ice cream truck then the sun, and ended up overlooking the city they fell in love ❤️
There love story is full of the welcomed unexpected, and they reflected on it with candor and genuine connection. I left their session feeling like I had just hung out with long lost friends. I don’t know how I keep meeting the most awesome people on the planet, but 2017 keep it coming 🤘🏻we laughed first over a beer, chased down an ice cream truck then the sun, and ended up overlooking the city they fell in love ❤️ I don’t know how I keep meeting the most awesome people on the planet, but 2017 keep it coming 🤘🏻
If you had to describe your relationship in one word, what would it be?
What was the first thing you noticed about each other?:
She was kind, beautiful, and had a certain sophistication about her.
He was warm, engaging, funny and super cute. I was immediately drawn to his energy.
How would you describe your fiancé:
Jen is extremely thoughtful and selfless. She has the biggest heart and wears it on her sleeve. She is playful and fun loving, yet assertive and gets things done!
Kevin is my perfect fit and partner. He is supportive, patient, silly, kind and compassionate. He understands me better than sometimes I do! And still loves me unconditionally.
Sometimes love stories aren’t perfect. Sometimes your path is one you never imagine having to walk down. Disappointment, heartbreak, failures…they may add up to seem like there is no chance for happiness again. But I’m learning–from my own experiences and the stories of my couples–that those events are actually life’s way of providing shelter for your heart; a way of steering you towards the life that’s meant for you. The sun will rise again, your heart will smile again, and you will make room for the love you truly deserve. ❤

2017 will be a big year for them. They will be celebrating medical school graduation, finally being able to settle down in one city, and their wedding in May. The next time I photograph them will be when they exchange vows in Ho Chi Minh City. I’m SO pumped to see them on the other side of the world!!
Describe your best date, real or imaginary:
Wake up early and have a big breakfast, go to the local viet restaurant and get some banh mi and boba tea to go, then head to the beach. We’re poor so our beach gear will be from the trash, but saving money will make us both happy. We’ll grab a good spot on an empty beach, play in the ocean, and listen to the waves as we sleep. We usually have a competition to find the best looking shells.
What was the first thing you noticed about your significant other?
Andrew: How kind she was, from her smile to her interactions with her family.
KA: How tall and loud he was. I remembered asking myself when is that guy ever gonna be quiet. Super funny and childist yet sincere and caring
How would you describe your fiancé?
Andrew- She always puts the ones she loves first in her thoughts and her actions. She has continued to show enormous amounts of thought and love in our relationship and her family. I’m a very lucky guy!
KA- He is a very kind and caring man. He is dedicated and hard working in every aspect of his life. Not only with school, working out, but he also spends a lot of time and effort into the people and animals around him, even his stupid fish! He has learned Vietnamese and my culture even though it’s super difficult, which shows how much he cares. My family adores him. My friends love to have him around. I love him so much yet really wanna choke him to death because he knows exactly how to piss me off haha! He is my super hero <3. Sometimes I really think he is not real.
They first met each other at the tender age of 14 and could describe that moment in detail. 14 years later, they have a love as deep as their history together.
This session is close to my heart because they chose to have it documented in the spaces that mean the most to them. They blasted their favorite music, practiced their first dance in the kitchen, jumped on their bed, and talked about their future. It was true and genuine and I honestly couldn’t thank them enough for letting me put their life on film.
Greta and Ben, thank you for the 9 million hilarious inside jokes that were created this day and made my cheeks hurt, and for opening your home and life to me. Y’all are 100. Can’t wait for April guys!!! xoxox

That DRESS. Those SMILES. That VIEW. Joyous, festive, and surrounded by friends and family from all over the globe, this engagement party celebrating Aayah and Amr was divine.
When Aayah and Amr arrived, everyone erupted with cheers and the mood never ceased. And can we just take a moment to appreciate how stylish these two are? The blue jewel embellishments on Aayah’s dress matched her equally gorgeous sapphire engagement ring and Amr was seriously dapper in his wine colored tux. I only have dreams of being so cool.
The tender way these two looked at each other all night is life, guys. I’m so stoked for their wedding next year! Cheers guys, and congratulations!!
